Young child hospitalized in life-threatening condition following Markham house fire

A young child is in life-threatening condition after being rescued from a residential fire in Markham on Tuesday afternoon. 

Emergency crews were called to the area of 16th Avenue and 9th Line at approximately 12:02 p.m. for reports of a house fire. Firefighters arrived to find a residential property actively burning and immediately began evacuation and suppression efforts. 

As crews cleared the home, a young child was located inside the residence suffering from critical injuries. The child was transported to hospital and remains in life-threatening condition, officials of York Regional Police confirmed. 

The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and will be attending the scene to 

 investigate the cause of the fire.  

As emergency crews continue their work. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
