York Regional Police are warning residents to remain vigilant after a recent spike in robberies linked to private cash for currency meetups. Victims had arranged foreign-currency exchanges through online platforms and community groups. When they arrived for the meeting, they were confronted, robbed, and in some cases had their phones taken.

The latest robbery happened on December 8, 2025, around 7 p.m. on Douglas Haig Drive in Markham. The victim planned to exchange cash. Four suspects approached him, stole his money and cellphone, and fled.

Another incident occurred on November 30, 2025, on Sabiston Drive near Highway 7 and Kennedy Road. The victim arranged a cash exchange with a woman on a social media app. When he reached the home, several suspects robbed him and escaped in a black Mercedes SUV.

A third robbery took place on November 10, 2025 at the same Sabiston Drive address. The victim was waiting outside for a planned cash exchange with a woman. Two male suspects approached her and stole her money and cellphone.

Police believe the suspects in all three cases may be connected. They are urging anyone with information to come forward.

York Regional Police warn that meeting strangers to exchange large amounts of cash is dangerous. These crimes can often be prevented by using banks or licensed financial services.
