Ontario – York Regional Police (YRP) are warning residents about a scam involving fake speed camera tickets being sent through text messages. Fraudsters are sending texts that claim the recipient must click on a link to pay an outstanding fine for a speed camera violation.

According to police, these scam texts are crafted to appear urgent and official, but they are actually designed to steal personal and financial information.  YRP emphasizes that legitimate traffic or speed camera tickets, including payment instructions, are never sent via text message. Instead, all official communication regarding traffic violations is delivered through traditional mail.

Residents are strongly advised not to click on any links or download attachments from unsolicited or suspicious text messages. Any messages requesting payment for tickets or fines via text should be ignored. If a person receives such a message and is unsure of its legitimacy, they are urged to verify directly through official channels or contact the issuing agency using publicly available contact information.

Those who have fallen victim to this scam and have lost money should report the incident immediately to York Regional Police. Reports can be filed online at yrp.ca or by phone on1-866-876-5423.

For scam reports that did not result in financial loss, individuals are encouraged to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

YRP reminds the public to remain cautious of digital communications and to rely on official sources for matters related to traffic enforcement and payments.
