Peel Regional Police have arrested and charged two teenagers following reports of a firearm at a Mississauga school earlier this week.
Police said in a news release that on Feb. 25 at about 1:40 p.m., officers with Peel police responded to a call about a student allegedly carrying a gun at a school in the area of Erin Centre Boulevard and Glen Erin Drive.
When officers arrived, they determined the individual in question was inside a neighbouring community centre and never in the the school building. As a safety measure, both the school and the adjacent community centre were placed under lockdown while police investigated.
Authorities located two males at the community centre and took them into custody without incident. Police say the pair were found with a loaded, illegal handgun. Investigators also confirmed that neither of the accused are students at the nearby school.
Following further investigation, officers concluded that no threats had been made and there was no evidence to suggest the suspects planned to harm anyone at either location.
Police took a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, both males from Mississauga. Both remain in custody pending a bail hearing. They face multiple charges, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, careless storage of a firearm, and carrying a concealed weapon, among other related firearms offences.
Police are asking anyone with additional information to contact the 11 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau at 905-453-2121 ext. 1133. Tips can also be provided anonymously through Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online.
