Toronto Police Service is warning the public about an increase in romance scams ahead of Valentine’s Day following charges against a Mississauga man and woman. Police say the alleged scheme involved victims in both Canada and the United States.

Investigators allege the accused used online dating apps to contact individuals. The male suspect allegedly posed as a successful businessman using the name “Hronek Radko.” Police say he used photos of another person and provided fraudulent documents to gain victims’ trust. He claimed to operate a company in the Greater Toronto Area called Ocean Global Auto Ltd., also known as Ocean Auto.

According to police, after establishing online relationships, the suspect convinced victims to send large sums of money as business loans. Once the funds were transferred, he allegedly cut off communication and used the money for personal benefit.

On January 21, 2026, officers executed a search warrant at a residence and vehicle in Mississauga. Evidence was seized and two individuals were arrested.

Charles Azi, 36, has been charged with fraud over $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Patricia Azi, 42, has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. Both are scheduled to appear in court.

Police say romance scams often increase in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day. They are urging the public to exercise caution, particularly if an online relationship progresses quickly, the individual avoids meeting in person, or requests money. Authorities note that demands for payment through bank drafts, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency are common warning signs.

Investigators emphasize that romance scams are deliberate schemes designed to manipulate victims emotionally for financial gain.
