Toronto Police say two adults and a 16-year-old youth were arrested following an overnight auto theft investigation in the city’s east end.

Around 1:43 a.m. on Jan. 20, 2026, officers in the Morningside Avenue and Halfway Avenue area allegedly saw suspects removing licence plates from a parked vehicle and smashing its sunroof. The plates were then attached to the suspects’ vehicle, which later intentionally collided with a police cruiser while fleeing. One suspect ran but was quickly arrested.

Police say the suspect vehicle was reported stolen, and officers recovered a car key reprogramming device and a programmable master key.

Alaa Khaled, 19, of Toronto, faces multiple charges including theft under $5,000, dangerous operation, possession of property obtained by crime, unlawfully purchasing an automobile master key, possessing an electronic device for motor vehicle theft, plus several breach-related offences.

Matin Ahmad, 18, of Toronto, is charged with theft under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, unlawfully purchasing an automobile master key, and possessing an electronic device for motor vehicle theft.

The 16-year-old youth (not identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act) faces similar charges and additional release order breaches.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and urge the public to report suspicious activity related to vehicle theft.
