Transport Canada has issued a warning to Air India following the arrest of one of its pilots at Vancouver International Airport, reminding the airline it could face penalties if alcohol safety rules are violated.
The incident happened on Dec. 23, when the pilot was detained after a “report of concern” involving an airline crew member, according to Richmond RCMP. The pilot had been preparing to operate Air India’s daily flight from Vancouver to Delhi. The flight was delayed for several hours before eventually departing.
Police say the investigation is ongoing and no additional details have been released.
In a statement, Transport Canada said it is working with Air India and India’s aviation regulator to ensure appropriate follow-up. While regulatory oversight of the airline rests primarily with India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Canadian officials stressed they would act if safety concerns arise.
Canadian aviation rules prohibit pilots and crew from performing duties within 12 hours of consuming alcohol or while under its influence. Transport Canada warned that assigning unfit crew could lead to suspended or cancelled flight authorizations, along with other penalties.
Air India has not commented publicly on the incident.
