A tragic case of intimate partner violence unfolded over 24 hours this week, beginning with a fatal shooting in Brampton and ending with the death of the suspect during a police interaction in Niagara Falls.

The victim has been identified by family as 29-year-old Savannah Kulla, a mother of four young children ; three boys and a one year old daughter.

At approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Peel Regional Police responded to reports of gunfire in the parking lot of a plaza near Queen Street East and Airport Road in Brampton. Officers found Kulla suffering from gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the suspect, 38-year-old Anthony Deschepper, allegedly fled the scene in a black 2024 Nissan Kicks with a Quebec licence plate. At the time of the escape, the couple’s one-year-old daughter was in the back seat, triggering an Amber Alert shortly after.

The baby was safely recovered a short time later after being dropped off with relatives in Niagara Region, police confirmed.

As the investigation unfolded, Peel police issued warnings to residents near Prospect Point and Ridgeway Road in Niagara Falls on Tuesday night, urging them to shelter in place amid concerns the suspect might be in the area.

At around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Niagara Regional Police located Deschepper at a gas station near Thorold Stone Road and Montrose Road. According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), there was an “interaction” between Deschepper and officers, during which one officer discharged multiple rounds. Deschepper was pronounced dead at the scene.

A firearm belonging to the suspect was recovered. Investigators said there is currently no evidence that the suspect fired the weapon. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for Thursday.

Police confirmed that Deschepper was travelling in a Chevy vehicle at the time, accompanied by a woman who has since been arrested. Charges are pending against her, but the nature of her relationship with the suspect remains unknown. The Nissan Kicks originally connected to the shooting was also recovered.

Investigators described the killing as an intimate partner-related homicide. It marked Peel Region’s 10th homicide of the year.
