Toronto Police are alerting the public about a dramatic rise in distraction thefts, where thieves use clever tricks to divert victims’ attention and steal their valuables. According to Chief Superintendent Mandeep Mann, 374 cases have been reported so far this year, compared to just 28 during the same period last year — an alarming increase of 1,235 percent.

Chief Mann explained that these crimes are often underreported and that suspects tend to take advantage of people’s kindness and willingness to help. Distraction thefts usually involve tactics such as asking for directions, starting a conversation, spilling something on the victim, pretending to offer a gift like a necklace, or appealing to emotions by suggesting a prayer. While the victim is distracted, another person may quietly steal their jewelry, phone, wallet, or purse.

The individuals most commonly targeted are seniors between the ages of 60 and 90, particularly those who are alone and wearing visible jewelry. Most of these incidents are taking place in parking lots, on sidewalks, or just outside people’s homes.

Toronto Police are encouraging residents to remain alert in public spaces and to be mindful of their surroundings. People are advised to keep their belongings secure and zipped, to stay cautious around overly friendly strangers, and to avoid placing valuables on public surfaces like restaurant tables. If someone attempts to get unusually close or tries to place something on you without your consent, it is best to move away immediately.

Authorities are asking the public to report any suspicious behavior or theft immediately by calling 911. Police say they are actively investigating these cases and want to prevent more residents from falling victim to these kinds of crimes.
