The Toronto Police Service is alerting the public about an ongoing investigation involving fraudulent automobile insurance documents.
Police say that between May 2025 and February 2026, several complaints were received from victims who unknowingly purchased fake car insurance policies. Investigators allege the victims believed they were dealing with legitimate insurance brokers when arranging coverage for their vehicles.
According to police, the suspects promised victims lower annual insurance rates and later provided them with pink slips containing policy numbers from well-known insurance companies.
Many victims did not realize the documents were fraudulent until they were involved in a collision or were stopped by police and asked to provide proof of insurance.
Authorities are reminding the public to take precautions when purchasing auto insurance. Police advise residents to only obtain insurance through licensed brokers or reputable companies and to verify policy numbers directly with the insurance provider using contact information listed on the company’s official website.
Investigators also warn residents to avoid third-party sellers offering unusually cheap insurance rates and to be cautious of anyone requesting payment upfront in cash or through e-transfer, as legitimate insurance companies typically do not require these payment methods.
