Toronto police have arrested a 20 year old man in connection with a SIM-swapping scheme that allegedly enabled him to access a victim’s financial and digital accounts and steal funds.

The investigation began on September 21, 2023, after police were notified of a suspected SIM-swapping fraud valued at more than $5,000.

According to investigators, a telecommunications employee was contacted and allegedly persuaded to provide their work credentials. Those credentials were then used to transfer the victim’s phone number from their device to a device controlled by the accused.

With the victim’s phone number in hand, the suspect was allegedly able to bypass security measures and gain access to several of the victim’s digital platforms, including email, cryptocurrency accounts, and a banking application. Police say funds were subsequently transferred from the victim’s accounts into accounts controlled by the suspect.

Detectives later identified multiple pieces of digital evidence linking the accused to the fraudulent activity.

On November 7, 2025, Hamad Ali, 20, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with:

  • Personation to Gain Advantage
  • Intercept Private Communication
  • Fraudulently Obtain Computer Service
  • Mischief to Data
  • Fraud Over $5000
  • Obtain/Possess Identity Information for a Fraudulent Offence
