Toronto man charged in random, unprovoked assault in Vaughan Plaza

Police have laid charges in connection with a random and unprovoked assault that occurred last month in the City of Vaughan. 

York Regional Police say officers responded to reports of an assault in a plaza parking lot near Mable Smith Way and Interchange Way at around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2025. Investigators say a woman was walking through the parking lot when she was approached from behind by a suspect and assaulted with an unknown object. The suspect then fled the scene in a white Mercedes sedan. The victim sustained minor injuries and was treated. 

Following an investigation by the York Regional Police #4 District Criminal Investigations Bureau, a suspect was identified. On Wednesday, January 7, 2025, Alexandros Jorge Acosta, 28, of Toronto, was arrested and charged. 

Acosta is facing charges of Assault with a Weapon and Operation While Prohibited. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
