In response to rising temperatures and the growing threat of extreme heat events, the City of Toronto has launched a new initiative to support vulnerable residents. As part of a $200,000 pilot project approved in the 2025 budget, the City is providing 500 portable air conditioners to low-income seniors across Toronto.
“Everyone needs a safe and comfortable place to call home. This year, we have already seen three historic heat waves which can be dangerous and even deadly. At City Hall, we are stepping up with a new pilot program to provide 500 free air conditioners to low-income seniors, who are the most vulnerable. We are working in collaboration with tenant advocates to ensure safe and affordable homes for renters in our city.” said Mayor Olivia Chow.
Since the beginning of July, over 380 units have already been delivered and installed at no cost to recipients through the City’s Air Conditioning Assistance Program, which began earlier this spring. The program ensures in-suite installation and aims to provide much-needed relief for seniors most at risk during prolonged heatwaves.
This effort is part of the City’s broader strategy to address the impacts of climate change, including the increasing frequency of extreme heat events that can pose serious health risks, particularly for older adults.
In addition to the air conditioner program, Toronto’s Heat Relief Network continues to offer access to more than 500 designated Cool Spaces, such as public libraries, community centers, and pools. During periods of Heat Warnings, additional spaces like the Metro Hall Rotunda are activated to operate 24/7, ensuring residents have safe, air-conditioned locations nearby.
