Following a deadly terror attack outside a synagogue near Manchester, England, police forces in the Greater Toronto Area are stepping up security measures ahead of the Jewish High Holy Days.
The Toronto Police Service announced increased patrols around synagogues and other places of worship, along with the establishment of command posts at select locations to provide immediate community support. York Regional Police have also confirmed enhanced foot and mobile patrols near faith-based institutions, schools, and community centers.
Authorities stressed that there is no specific threat to the region but emphasized that these proactive measures are aimed at reassuring residents and ensuring the safety of the Jewish community during the High Holy Days.
The heightened security follows Thursday’s attack in northern England, where an assailant rammed a car into worshippers outside a synagogue on Yom Kippur before carrying out a knife attack, killing two people and injuring four others. British police shot the attacker dead at the scene and declared the incident a terrorist act.
Both Toronto and York police are urging residents to immediately report any hate crimes or bias-related incidents by calling 911 in emergencies or using the non emergency line.
