York Regional Police say a suspect has been charged in connection with a series of robberies targeting people arranging private currency exchanges with strangers.
Police say that between October 2025 and January 2026, victims set up foreign-currency transactions through online platforms or community groups and were later robbed during meetups. Investigators allege the suspect allegedly communicated with victims by phone, text and in person to arrange the meetings, where they were then robbed by unidentified suspects in six such money exchange meetups. Police say that in one incident the money was stolen without violence.
On March 12, 2026, police charged Fang Lin, 35, of Markham, with six counts of conspiracy to commit robbery and one count of theft over $5,000.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims, and the suspect’s photo has been released.
Police are reminding the public to avoid private cash-for-currency exchanges with strangers and instead use banks or licensed financial institutions.
