Suspect charged after residential break and enter in Markham

York Regional Police have laid multiple charges against a Markham resident following a series of attempted break-ins in the city last week. 

On November 18, 2025, officers were called to the area of Old Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue East around 6:50 a.m. after receiving reports of a break and enter in progress. Investigators say the suspect entered a home through an unlocked sliding door but fled when confronted by the homeowner. 

Further investigation revealed that the same suspect had attempted to gain access to at least two additional homes in the neighbourhood. 

Police arrested the accused on November 26, 2025. 

Accused Identified as Nishanth Selvaratnam, 36, of Markham. He has been charged with Break and Enter with Intent , 2 counts of Trespass at Night and Breach of Probation 

At the time of the incidents, Selvaratnam was already on probation for unrelated matters 

York Regional Police have released a photo of the accused, noting that investigators believe there may be more victims who have not yet come forward.
