Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has launched an investigation after a 27-year-old man died after falling from a balcony while Toronto police officers were responding to a domestic violence complaint in North York. “As Toronto Police Service officers were in the area at the time of the man’s death following a fall from height, the SIU was notified and invoked its mandate.”, the SIU said in a news release

According to this release, on December 31, 2025, at around 11:30 p.m., police officers were called to the area of Jane Street and Highway 401 in North York regarding a report of a domestic violence incident.

The man was found on the ground after falling from a balcony. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. “Officers attempted to locate and arrest the man involved in an apartment unit when the man was located on the ground below. EMS responded and pronounced the man deceased at the scene.”, the news release from SIU reads.

Three investigators, along with two forensic investigators, have been appointed to this case. The SIU is asking anyone with information related to the case—including photos or video evidence—to get in touch with the lead investigator by calling 1-800-787-8529 or by submitting information online through the SIU website.
