The suspected gunman in the deadly mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., has been identified as Jesse Strang, as new details emerge about the victims of one of the worst school attacks in Canadian history.
CTV News has confirmed that Jennifer Strang, the shooter’s mother, and his sibling, Emmett, were among those killed in Tuesday’s violence.
In total, 10 people are dead, including the suspect, and approximately 25 others were injured in the attack that unfolded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Authorities have not yet released further details about the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the shooter’s family members.
The small northeastern B.C. community remains in shock as investigators continue to piece together the events that led to the tragedy.
Carney: Canada “in shock” and “in mourning”
Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the House of Commons on Wednesday, describing the country as “in shock” and “in mourning.”
“Tumbler Ridge represents the very best of Canada, resilient, compassionate, and strong,” Carney said, after reflecting on the town’s history and character.
Before party leaders spoke, the House of Commons unanimously agreed to observe a moment of silence for the victims. Parliamentary pages and MPs were seen passing around boxes of tissues as members on both sides of the aisle addressed the chamber. The remainder of the day’s parliamentary agenda was cancelled.
Carney extended his “profound gratitude” to first responders, as well as teachers and school staff “who acted with extraordinary courage to protect the children in their care.”
“In the darkest of moments, they showed the best of Canada,” he said.
The prime minister said he has spoken with B.C. Premier David Eby and that the federal public safety minister is co-ordinating Ottawa’s response.
