Investigators searching the remains of a Brampton home destroyed in a deadly blaze have discovered what they believe to be the remains of another adult. The devastating fire broke out early Thursday morning at 12 Banas Way and left the structure partially collapsed, making it too unsafe for crews to enter. As a result, the home is being excavated piece by piece to allow for a safe search and investigation.
Peel Regional Police Const. Tyler Bell said demolition and search operations were paused Friday to allow the coroner to attend the scene after the discovery of the remains.
On Thursday, two people were found dead;one inside the home and another outside. Four others survived by jumping from the second floor and were rushed to hospital in critical condition. By Friday, police said three of those individuals were in serious but stable condition, while one adult remained in life-threatening condition. A five-year-old child, who was among the injured, is now “doing well” but not yet able to speak about the incident.
Officials confirmed that 11 people lived in the home; nine members of a multi-generational family and two individuals in a basement unit, who escaped safely.
Machines were being used to carefully dismantle the home when the latest remains were discovered. Police have also confirmed that a child is believed to be among the 2 individuals still unaccounted for.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the fire, which remains unknown.
