Mississauga is set to receive nearly $11 million from the Ontario government to fund speed bumps and other traffic calming measures aimed at improving road safety, particularly in school zones.
The funding includes a previously announced $2.2 million provided last November after the province scrapped automated speed enforcement cameras across Ontario. That initial payment came through the first phase of the province’s new Road Safety Initiatives Fund, which will distribute $210 million to municipalities over two years.
A staff report presented to the city’s general committee recommends the $2.2 million be divided evenly across Mississauga’s 11 wards, focusing on physical traffic calming measures in areas where the city’s 22 speed cameras had been located before the ban took effect on Nov. 14. All cameras were shut down by Nov. 13 and removed days later.
An additional $8.93 million will be made available to the city for future road safety upgrades, with funds reimbursed after costs are incurred.
Before the province-wide ban, Mississauga officials argued the speed camera program, launched in 2021, improved safety in school zones, reducing average speeds by nine kilometres per hour. Between June 2021 and August 2025, more than 169,000 fines were issued under the program.
