Toronto Police Service has provided an updated in connection with the murder of a 20-year-old University of Toronto student. Police have arrested a suspect. Police identified the shooting victim as 20-year-old Shivank Avasthi, who was a University of Toronto student.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at around 3:34 p.m. in the area of Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road. Officers found the man at the scene in critical condition with gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the suspect fled before officers arrived. Police identified the victim as 20-year-old Toronto resident Shivank Avasthi.
As part of the investigation, police have arrested a 28-year-old Toronto man named Babatunde Afuwape and charged him with first-degree murder. He was expected to attend a court hearing at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre, located at 2201 Finch Avenue West, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at 9:30 a.m., in courtroom 103.

“We recognize that this incident caused a great deal of fear and concern for students, staff, and members of the surrounding community, and we want to reassure them that the person responsible is in our custody,” Detective Sergeant McCabe. “We believe that there may have been more people on the trail or on campus on December 23 that may have seen or interacted with the accused. If you saw this individual or had any interaction with him on December 23, we would like you to contact us.”
