Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, will travel to China next week. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed in a press release issued today that he will be on an official visit to China from January 13 to January 17, 2026. This will be the first time a Canadian prime minister has visited China since 2017. It is expected that during the visit, the two countries will hold discussions on trade, energy, agriculture, and international security.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the prime minister will also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Their previous meeting took place on October 31 last year in South Korea on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum. That meeting marked the first official meeting between the leaders of the two countries since 2017. He is also scheduled to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, along with other government and business leaders, to strengthen cooperation on trade, energy, agriculture, and international security.

Canada–China relations have remained strained in recent years. Ottawa imposed a 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, along with a 25 per cent import tax on steel and aluminum. In response, China slapped a 100 per cent tariff on several Canadian agricultural products, including canola oil and peas, and introduced a 25 per cent levy on pork and seafood.

The Prime Minister will also travel to Davos, Switzerland, from January 19 to 21, 2026, to attend the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting. During the visit, he is expected to meet with government and business leaders and investors to strengthen Canada’s economic partnerships and promote new opportunities for Canadian workers and industries. The trip will also focus on positioning Canada as a leading destination for global investment, highlighting its strengths in natural resources, agriculture, energy, and advanced technologies.
