Peel Regional Police and Sheridan College Launch 2025 Youth in Policing Initiative

Toronto/July 2, 2025

Peel Regional Police, in partnership with Sheridan College, has announced the continuation of its summer Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) for 2025. As part of this program, 35 students will have the opportunity to learn about Peel Police and Sheridan College, gaining experience in courses such as Forensic Sciences, Private Security, and Fitness. The 8-week program will run from July 2 to August 22.

Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said “Peel Police is proud to collaborate with Sheridan College once again for this year’s Youth in Policing Initiative. This valuable program plays a key role in not only building positive relationships with youth but also offering them meaningful insight into the many rewards of a career in policing. We’re excited to work alongside these students in the weeks ahead — and into the future.”

Around 10 students who participated last year are returning as volunteers. Launched in 2009, the YIPI program saw a significant increase in interest after partnering with Sheridan College in 2022—with applications rising from 74 to 1,180.

YIPI program is funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services and is designed for youth aged 15 to 18 from diverse backgrounds. It helps them develop leadership, employment, and life skills.
