Peel Regional Police have shared details about the success achieved by their Break and Enter and Auto Response (BEAR) Unit in its first three months. Under the pilot program launched on September 1, a total of 21 arrests have been made so far, 165 charges have been laid, and 80 stolen vehicles have been recovered.

The BEAR Unit is a specialized plainclothes team created to combat organized break-and-enter and auto-related crimes. The pilot program was designed to strengthen enforcement, enhance support for victims, and dismantle criminal networks impacting communities across the Peel region. The BEAR Unit will operate until March 2026 and will undergo evaluation, with early findings already showing positive impacts for both victims and the broader community.

Police say that supporting victims remains a key focus of the BEAR pilot program. Officers reached out to 95 per cent of identified victims within 72 hours of a report being filed, offering prompt information, assistance, and resources. These supports included crime-prevention materials, access to an online evidence-submission portal, and opportunities for victims to provide feedback.

In addition to enforcement efforts, the unit emphasizes prevention and building stronger community connections. This work includes hosting community meetings, collaborating with shopping centres, hotels, hospitals, and property managers, and distributing educational and crime-prevention materials throughout the region.
