The Ford government has taken control of the Peel District School Board, placing it under provincial supervision in a move it says is necessary to restore stability and confidence in the board’s operations.

Education Minister Paul Calandra announced the intervention, saying the province acted to stop internal decisions that risked creating disruption partway through the school year. According to the minister, proposed staffing changes at the board could have led to confusion and instability for families and educators.

Calandra also signalled potential further action elsewhere in the province, warning that the York Catholic District School Board is being closely watched. He cited ongoing internal conflict and financial issues at the board, saying it has been placed “on notice” by the ministry.

The move reflects the government’s growing willingness to directly intervene in school board governance when it believes internal dysfunction could affect students and classrooms.
