According to information shared by the Canadian immigration department, invitations under the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) will be issued later this month. Those who receive an invitation will then be eligible to submit their applications and supporting documents.

No New Applications This Year

Once again this year, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will not be accepting new expressions of interest under the PGP. Only those individuals who had submitted their interest to sponsor in 2020 will be considered for invitations. It’s worth noting that since 2021, the federal government has not reopened the intake for new applications under this program.

Target of 10,000 Applications

Although the targets announced in October 2024 suggested that up to 24,500 PGP applications would be accepted in 2025, IRCC has once again set the target at only 10,000 applications for this year. This reflects an ongoing trend of reduced immigration targets. The federal government plans to admit a total of 395,000 new permanent residents in 2025, 380,000 in 2026, and 365,000 in 2027.

Specifically, under the Parents and Grandparents Program, Canada aims to admit 21,500 parents and grandparents in 2026 and 20,000 in 2027.

What If You Don’t Receive an Invitation?

For those who do not receive an invitation under the PGP, alternative options include applying for a Visitor Visa or a Super Visa. A regular Visitor Visa allows parents to stay in Canada for up to 6 months. A Super Visa, however, allows eligible parents or grandparents to remain in Canada for up to 5 consecutive years. It’s important to note that only Canadian citizens and permanent residents can invite their parents under the Super Visa program.
