The federal and Ontario governments have jointly announced a major $3 billion investment to build four small nuclear reactor projects in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
Prime Minister Mark Carney has designated the Darlington New Nuclear Project as one of national importance, ensuring that it will move forward on an accelerated timeline. Under the plan, the federal government will contribute $2 billion, while Premier Doug Ford’s government will provide $1 billion toward the initiative.
According to Ontario Power Generation (OPG), the total cost of the project is estimated at $21 billion. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission granted approval earlier this year for the construction of the first Small Modular Reactor (SMR), with work having already begun in the spring.
Once all four reactors are operational, they are expected to generate 1,200 megawatts of electricity ;enough to power approximately 1.2 million homes across Ontario.
