Ontario has created a new expert panel, the Nuclear Isotope Innovation Council of Ontario (NIICO), to double the province’s medical isotope production by 2030. These isotopes are crucial for diagnosing and treating cancer, and for sterilizing medical equipment.

Currently, Ontario produces about 50% of the world’s supply from its nuclear stations and McMaster University. The panel will work with hospitals and industry experts to expand production and strengthen supply chains.

Minister of Energy and Mines Stephen Lecce said the move will support cancer care, save lives, and create jobs. The first report from the panel is expected in September 2025.

The government aims to grow Ontario’s role in the global isotope market, supported by ongoing nuclear upgrades and a new small modular reactor at Darlington. The plan is part of Ontario’s broader life sciences and energy strategies.
