Toronto, ON – The Ontario New Democratic Party will decide the fate of its leader, Marit Stiles, this weekend as delegates cast ballots in a mandatory leadership review.

The vote comes just one week after Ontario Liberals ousted their leader, Bonnie Crombie, following a disappointing show of support at her own party’s convention. Crombie stepped down hours after receiving only 57 per cent backing from delegates.

Stiles, however, says she feels confident heading into her review.

“I never take anything for granted, of course, but we are coming together to mobilize, to organize, and to win,” Stiles said. She noted she has spent the summer touring roughly 50 ridings and connecting with members across the province.

The review comes six months after Premier Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives secured a third consecutive majority government in a snap election. The NDP finished second in seats, holding 27, down four from the previous vote, but placed third in the popular vote with just 18 per cent.

Despite the dip in voter share, Stiles insists the party remains united and focused on stability at a time when the Ontario Liberals are preparing for yet another leadership race.

“They have to do some soul searching to figure out who they are,” Stiles said of the Liberals. “People need to know they’ve got someone in their corner. And so I think that stability is going to be really important right now.”

NDP strategist Mélanie Richer agrees, saying she does not expect Stiles to face a serious internal challenge this weekend. Instead, she argues the party must concentrate on defining itself as the clear alternative to Doug Ford’s Conservatives.
