The Ontario government is moving forward with its plan to protect and empower workers by launching the sixth round of the Skills Development Fund (SDF) Training Stream. This latest round will provide $260 million in funding for innovative projects that support hiring, training, and upskilling of workers in high-demand sectors, including manufacturing, health care, construction, automotive, and other skilled trades.

The investment is part of the province’s broader $2.5 billion commitment through the SDF, designed to ensure Ontario workers have the tools they need to secure good, well-paying jobs and to help the province remain competitive amid U.S. tariffs and global economic uncertainty.

“Our government is protecting Ontario by training the workers we need to keep building, no matter what global challenges come our way,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “Through this $260 million investment in the Skills Development Fund, we’re funding results-driven training to build the strong workforce we need to support workers and their families and keep building Ontario’s economy.”

With five successful SDF rounds already complete, a wide range of organizations are now invited to apply for funding. Eligible applicants include employers, training and employment service providers, labour unions, business and industry organizations, hospitals, Indigenous Band offices, Indigenous Skills and Employment Training (ISET) agreement holders, service system managers, and other community organizations. Proposals can be submitted through Transfer Payment Ontario, with applications closing on October 1, 2025.

Piccini has also announced the recipients of a $20-million investment that was part of the last round of skills funding, which includes money for youth, manufacturing and hospitality workers as well as for health care workers such as nurses.

This sixth round of funding reinforces the Ontario government’s long-term vision of a resilient, highly skilled workforce that can adapt to changing economic realities while supporting strong, sustainable growth in communities across the province.
