Ontario government has announced that over the next two years, it will fund 20,000 additional orthopedic surgeries—such as hip and knee replacements—through private community surgical centers. A total of $125 million will be allocated for this initiative.
Health Minister Sylvia Jones said the move aims to give people “more connected and convenient” access to health care services. These surgical centers will be accredited by Accreditation Canada, ensuring quality standards.
Importantly, no surgical Centre is allowed to deny an insured service to a patient who chooses not to pay for optional, uninsured upgrades. Additionally no one can pay to receive insured care faster than others— care will remain publicly funded and fairly accessible.
Applications to open new surgical centers will be accepted from July 2 to August 27, and the first licenses are expected to be issued in January 2026.
