The Ontario government has introduced new legislation; “Building a More Competitive Economy Act”, that would ban the use of municipal speed cameras across the province. Officials say the goal is to reduce red tape and boost Ontario’s economic competitiveness.
Under the proposed law, municipalities would be encouraged to adopt alternative traffic-calming measures such as speed bumps, speed cushions, roundabouts, better signage, and public education campaigns.
The decision has triggered strong criticism from parent groups, who held protests across the province today. They argue that removing speed cameras will make children; especially in school zones , less safe and could increase the risk of collisions.
Premier Doug Ford’s government has defended the move, calling speed cameras a “cash grab” rather than an effective safety tool.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said the government shares concerns about reducing speeding but differs on the method.
“Ultimately, the best fix is to prevent speeding from happening in that zone at that moment. And a camera, a ticket that’s being issued, whether you speed it up by a week, doesn’t reflect the intended purpose of stopping speeding at that particular moment.” said the Transportation Minister
