The Ontario government is expanding “bring-your-own” (BYO) alcohol event permits for municipally designated outdoor cultural and community events, including farmer’s markets, movie nights, art exhibits, and neighbourhood festivals. The permits will allow attendees to bring their own alcohol for consumption in designated areas.

Attorney General Doug Downey said the move will provide communities with more flexibility to safely enjoy outdoor events while lowering costs for organizers and boosting local economies.

Municipalities must pass a bylaw permitting public alcohol use and establish a local process to determine which events qualify. Starting April 30, 2026, event organizers in participating municipalities can apply for BYO permits through the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy added that the initiative aims to empower local communities, increase tourism, and support economic growth while ensuring responsible enjoyment of alcohol.

The change is being implemented through an amendment to a regulation under the Liquor Licence and Control Act, giving cultural and community organizations greater flexibility for the upcoming spring and summer events.
