Premier Doug Ford announced today at the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference that the province will invest an additional $1.6 billion to accelerate housing and infrastructure projects across Ontario.

The funding nearly doubles the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP) to $4 billion. It will give municipalities and Indigenous communities more resources to build the roads, bridges, and water systems needed to support new housing.

Ford said the investment is part of his government’s push to lower costs, cut red tape, and ensure more Ontarians can find affordable homes. “We’re making record investments in housing and infrastructure so we can keep workers on the job and help families across the province find a home that meets their needs and their budgets,” he told delegates.

Launched in 2024, the MHIP has already helped enable the construction of 800,000 homes across Ontario. Combined with the province’s $1.2 billion Building Faster Fund, which rewards municipalities that exceed housing targets, the program is designed to keep Ontario’s housing supply on track.

That capital plan, which includes over $33 billion in spending this year alone, is set to expand transit, highways, hospitals, schools, and other housing-enabling infrastructure. Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Rob Flack stressed that affordability remains central to the government’s agenda. “For far too long, families and first-time buyers have been priced out of the market,” he said. “We’re using every tool in our toolbox to bring costs down.”

Local leaders welcomed the announcement. Robin Jones, AMO President and Mayor of Westport, said the funding will not only boost housing supply but also create thousands of jobs and strengthen local economies. “These investments will lay the foundation for long-term productivity,” she said, praising the province for its commitment.
