An Oakville woman says her recent trip to the U.S. turned into a nightmare after nearly $20,000 worth of luxury items went missing from her checked luggage.

Folake Enitilo had travelled to Fort Lauderdale to attend a family wedding. She flew with American Airlines and had connecting flights along the way. When her checked luggage arrived late at her hotel, she was shocked by what she found the next morning.

“All of my luxury items were gone,” Enitilo said.

She claims that a Louis Vuitton bag worth £6,150 (approximately $11,000 CAD), along with a designer purse, aviator sunglasses, and shoes, were all missing. Only a few clothing items remained in the suitcase.

“Someone clearly opened my suitcase and took the items,” she said.

Enitilo returned to the airport to file a complaint. She filled out a missing items form and also submitted receipts and photographs of the stolen belongings. However, she says she hasn’t received a clear response from the airline.

According to Dr. Gabor Lukacs, an air passenger rights advocate:

“When you check your luggage with an airline, they are legally responsible for it until it’s returned to you — including the contents. Even if items are stolen by a third party, the airline must compensate you.”

However, compensation is limited. Under the Montreal Convention, which sets out international rules for airline liability, passengers can only receive up to a set maximum for lost or damaged baggage.

In Enitilo’s case, American Airlines has agreed to compensate her $4,148.96 USD, which is the maximum allowed under the Montreal Convention.

But she isn’t satisfied.

“This is their fault. I paid for their service, and I expect to be fully compensated for what I lost,” Enitilo said. “If I have to take them to court, I will.”
