Canada’s first federal budget confidence vote is set to take place tonight, and NDP interim leader Don Davies has confirmed that his party will not allow the minority Liberal government to fall.
MPs will vote today on two amendments brought forward by the Bloc Québécois and the Conservatives. Both amendments call for the budget to be rejected, meaning these votes are considered matters of confidence. If the government loses either vote, it could trigger a snap federal election.
Davies stated that the NDP will not support the Conservative amendment, which is scheduled for a late vote today. However, no decision has yet been made regarding the Bloc amendment or the main budget vote.
House Leader Steven MacKinnon confirmed that the final vote on the budget will take place on Monday, November 17, after a one-week recess in the House of Commons. If both the Conservative and Bloc amendments fail, the November 17 vote will directly determine whether the House maintains confidence in the government’s budget.
