The New Democratic Party (NDP) has officially launched the race to elect its next federal leader. Party members will cast their votes between March 27 and 29, 2026, with the results to be announced on March 29, 2026, during the party’s convention in Winnipeg.

To be eligible to vote, new NDP members must register by January 28, 2026. Anyone who wants to run for leadership must submit their name for the ballot by January 31.

NDP President Mary Shortall said, “This leadership race is a great opportunity for our members and for people across Canada who want to discuss justice and the future direction of the country.”

The race comes after the NDP’s poor performance in the last federal election, where the party won only seven seats, one of its worst results in years. Former leader Jagmeet Singh also lost his own seat of Burnaby South (B.C.), leading him to announce his resignation in April.

Since May 5, Vancouver Kingsway MP Don Davies has been serving as the party’s interim leader.
