Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government has presented its first Federal Budget. RED FM Toronto reached out to Liberal MP Ruby Sahota to have comments on budget’s different aspects. Sahota said the latest federal budget marks a major milestone for both Brampton and Ottawa, pointing to the $25-million federal investment in Toronto Metropolitan University’s Brampton medical school ; the first direct federal funding for the project. The school, expected to open in 2026, will help address the doctor shortage in Peel Region and strengthen local healthcare and education infrastructure.

Sahota emphasized that while the government is maintaining key national programs such as the Canada Child Benefit, Disability Benefit, Old Age Pension, and Canada Dental Plan, it also achieved $60 billion in savings through departmental reviews. She said the budget focuses on building infrastructure, boosting productivity, enhancing competitiveness, investing in housing, defense, and security, and aims to eliminate the day-to-day deficit by 2028.

On immigration, she confirmed a reduction in temporary resident numbers; including international students and temporary foreign workers , while maintaining high levels of economic and permanent immigration. She said the government is prioritizing “the brightest minds” for research and innovation and continuing health care transfers to provinces.

For the first time Sahota noted that the federal government is also contributing capital funding for medical schools and hospital infrastructure, including Brampton’s project. She argued that these one time investments will create jobs and strengthen the economy through $115 billion in infrastructure spending outlined in the budget.
