A Mississauga man is facing multiple human trafficking charges following a year-long investigation involving York Regional Police, Hamilton Police, and the Provincial Human Trafficking Intelligence Led Joint Forces Strategy.

The joint investigation; dubbed Project Magnolia, began in May 2024 when Hamilton Police launched a probe into a suspect believed to be trafficking victims in Hamilton and across Ontario. As the case progressed, investigators discovered the same individual was also under investigation by York Regional Police’s Counter Exploitation Unit – Human Trafficking Section.

According to police, the accused is alleged to have recruited, trafficked, and exploited multiple victims between March 2017 and October 2025, including a victim under the age of 18. Investigators say he advertised sexual services online and took all proceeds generated by the victims.

Police further allege the suspect used violence and coercion to control the victims, including assaulting and choking them. He is also accused of sexually assaulting one victim and forcing another to marry someone for his financial gain. The accused has been identified as Jamiel SMITH, 34, of Mississauga.

York Regional Police have released a photo of the accused and believe additional victims may still be unidentified. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward.
