The federal government of Canada has officially designated the India-based Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity under the Criminal Code. Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said the move strengthens the powers of Canada’s security agencies, intelligence services, and police.
The Bishnoi gang, led from prison in India by Lawrence Bishnoi, has been linked to murder, shootings, arson, extortion, and intimidation. Under the new designation, authorities can seize the gang’s property, freeze bank accounts and prevent Canadians from providing funding or support.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown welcomed the decision, noting it follows months of advocacy by municipal leaders, law enforcement, and community organizations. In June 2025, he wrote to Prime Minister Mark Carney and Minister Anandasangaree urging urgent action.
Mayor Brown thanked the federal government for responding to appeals from Peel Regional Police, B.C. Premier David Eby, the World Sikh Organization, and municipal leaders across the country, including Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke, Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi, and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. He said the designation equips law enforcement with critical tools to protect communities, disrupt the gang’s networks, and restore public confidence.
