York Regional Police are warning residents in Markham to remain vigilant after two recent reports of jewelry distraction thefts involving the same suspects.
Police say the incidents are part of a distraction-style scam in which suspects drive through neighbourhoods targeting vulnerable individuals; most often seniors, who are alone and wearing visible jewelry. In these cases, a suspect may approach a victim on foot or engage them in conversation, sometimes asking for directions, before removing the victim’s jewelry and replacing it with fake gold items such as a bracelet, ring, or necklace. The suspects then quickly flee the area.
On Feb. 19, police say a female suspect approached victims in grocery store parking lots and attempted to engage them while offering fake gold jewelry. After stealing the victims’ jewelry, she ran to a grey Honda sedan occupied by additional suspects, and the vehicle left the scene. No injuries were reported in either incident.
Police are urging residents to be cautious when approached by strangers in public, especially individuals who appear overly friendly or who invade personal space. They also advise securing valuables so they are difficult to access and reporting any suspicious activity immediately.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the York Regional Police #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7545. Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online.
