Toronto police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man wanted in connection with an alleged hate-motivated assault in the city’s downtown core.
The incident is reported to have taken place on Friday, January 16, 2026, at approximately 7:22 p.m., inside the PATH underground shopping complex between Scotia Plaza and First Canadian Place. Police say they were notified of the assault on Monday, January 19.
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly approached the victim in what has been described as an unprovoked confrontation and spat on them. When the victim confronted the suspect, the man reportedly moved toward the victim in an aggressive manner while uttering anti-Black racial slurs. The suspect and victim are not known to each other.
The suspect was last seen walking toward Scotia Plaza.
He is described as a male in his late 20s, approximately six feet tall, with a slim build and dark-coloured hair. Police say he has tattoos on the backs of both hands. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a black three-quarter length winter jacket with the hood up and red vents under each arm, burgundy pants, dark running shoes and white wired earbuds.
He was also carrying a black backpack with a red luggage tag attached at the top and a small red patch on the back.
Investigators have released images of the suspect and confirm the case is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated offence.
