Man in 70s dead after vehicle crashes into building in Ottawa downtown

Tragic Wednesday morning vehicle crash in Ottawa downtown has claimed the life of one man in his 70s and has left four others injured after an SUV crashed into a building and hit four pedestrians. 

Ottawa police say that this fatal collision occurred shortly at around 9 a.m. this morning in the 500 block of Rideau Street, near Cobourg Street. According to the Ottawa Police Service, an SUV crashed into a drop-in centre operated by Capital City Mission, striking four pedestrians in the process. This centre provides meals, coffee, and clothing to individuals in need. 

Among those struck was a man in his 70s who was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. Police later confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries. Two other men were also injured and remain in critical but non-life-threatening condition. A woman who was hurt in the incident is reported to be in stable condition. 

The driver of the SUV, who also sustained injuries in the crash, was taken to hospital and is currently listed in stable condition. 

The investigation remains ongoing. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage of the incident and has not yet spoken with officers to come forward.
