Toronto police have charged a 36-year-old man with first-degree murder following a fatal fire at an encampment in the city’s downtown core.
Emergency crews were called to the area of Charles Street and Yonge Street at approximately 6:11 a.m. on Friday, December 26, 2025, after reports of a fire at a tent encampment. Upon arrival, first responders found a tent engulfed in flames.
Investigators allege the accused deliberately set a tent and mattress on fire and then threw additional items onto the blaze to intensify it. The victim was pulled from the burning tent and transported to hospital in life-threatening condition.
Police confirmed that the victim, 51-year-old Keith Appleby, died from his injuries on Monday, December 29.
Police said on Wednesday that Loewen Wolfe, 36, of Toronto, was arrested the same day and has now been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident.
