London, Ontario-A public health alert has been issued in southwestern Ontario following a confirmed outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease, with 43 reported cases in 2025, including one fatality.
The Middlesex-London Health Unit says most of the infections have emerged in southeast London, all concentrated within a six-kilometers radius, indicating a localized but significant public health concern.
Legionnaires’ disease is a serious respiratory illness triggered by Legionella bacteria. Health officials say the bacteria are commonly found in water systems such as storage tanks, cooling towers, and other water-based infrastructure.
Symptoms may include high fever, chills, and sweating, and in severe cases, it can develop into pneumonia.
Health officials are urgently calling on business owners and property managers to inspect, clean, and properly maintain their cooling and water systems to prevent further spread.
The public is also being advised to stay alert, monitor for symptoms, and seek medical attention if signs of the illness appear.
