Toronto, ON – Toronto police and marine crews are continuing the search for a man in his 20s who went missing in the waters off Bluffer’s Beach in Scarborough on Sunday night.
Duty Senior Officer Lhawang Jongdong said emergency responders were called around 9:15 p.m. after a man and a woman riding a rented jet ski went overboard.
Neither was a strong swimmer. Police say the man, who was operating the jet ski, gave his life jacket to the woman, allowing her to make it back to shore with the help of another rider on a separate jet ski.
“The female was able to live, and unfortunately the male himself obviously wasn’t able to swim, and as a result this tragedy occurred. Unfortunately, we’re still looking for him,” Jongdong told reporters.
The woman did not suffer serious injuries.
Police say there will be an investigation into the rental process, including why the watercraft was operated without enough life jackets on board.
Crews searched through the night until about 4:30 a.m. before resuming at 7:30 a.m. Monday. Members of the Toronto Police Marine Unit, assisted by the Canadian Coast Guard, remain on scene.
“We want to remind everyone to always check weather conditions before going out on the water, and please wear a life jacket and ensure you have the required safety equipment with you in case of emergency,” Jongdong said.
Police say they have spoken with the man’s family, who are “devastated” but remain “hopeful.”
Toronto Fire Services and Toronto Paramedic Services initially responded to the call but have since left the scene.
