Canadian border officials and police have arrested two men following a months-long investigation into illegal firearms and drug smuggling through an international mail and cargo processing centre near Toronto Pearson International Airport.

The probe began in October 2024 when officers with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) intercepted a suspicious parcel from China at the facility on Dixie Road in Mississauga. Inside, they found a firearm suppressor (commonly known as a silencer). Weeks later, a second package arrived from the United States containing a 50-round drum magazine, both bound for the same Ontario address — raising red flags about illegal weapons trafficking.

The discovery triggered a deeper investigation by the CBSA’s Ontario Firearms Smuggling Team, which worked in collaboration with local law enforcement agencies for nearly seven months. On May 29, 2025, officers executed a search warrant at a residence in London, Ontario, leading to the discovery of:

  • Privately manufactured pistols
  • A 3D printer suspected of being used to fabricate gun components
  • Multiple illicit substances, including:
    • Carfentanil, a synthetic opioid 100 times more toxic than fentanyl
    • Cocaine
    • Oxycodone
    • Boric acid, often used as a cutting agent in street drugs

Two Men Arrested, Facing Serious Charges named Benito Schiavone (33) and Modesto Dino Schiavone (57). Both men are now facing serious charges related to firearms and drug trafficking. Their next court appearance is scheduled for later this month. Authorities have not ruled out further arrests or charges as the investigation continues. The CBSA has reiterated the increasing threat posed by 3D-printed firearms and synthetic opioids and emphasized the importance of international parcel screening in stopping dangerous goods from entering Canadian communities.
