Ontario Premier Doug Ford has issued a warning that former U.S. President Donald Trump may soon launch an attack on the CUSMA (Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement), the trilateral trade agreement between Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. Ford is urging the Canadian federal government to begin preparations immediately for potential renegotiations.
While CUSMA is officially up for review in 2026, Ford believes Trump could act much sooner. According to new reports, Trump may make an announcement as early as November, should he return to office.
Ford stressed that Trump could terminate the agreement with a single signature, and as such, Canada must focus now on strengthening its economy and increasing domestic production.
In recent developments, Trump has already imposed significant tariffs on Canadian goods:
- 35% tariff on a wide range of products
- 50% tariff on steel and aluminum
- 25% tariff on the automotive sector
Federal Finance Minister Mark Carney stated that Canada has not yet responded with countermeasures, as most goods fall under the protections of the CUSMA agreement and are currently exempt from such tariffs.
Ford reiterated his full support for the federal government but emphasized that Canada should respond with its own tariffs where appropriate. He also suggested that, in the absence of counter-tariffs, Canada could take legal action against steel imports from other countries (such as China) to boost the use of Canadian steel domestically.
