Ontario Premier Doug Ford is raising fresh concerns about the federal government’s recent agreement with China that would allow thousands of Chinese-made electric vehicles into Canada.

Speaking at a news conference at Queen’s Park alongside auto sector representatives, Ford criticized Prime Minister Mark Carney’s deal, which permits up to 49,000 Chinese EVs into the Canadian market in exchange for lifting tariffs on Canadian canola and some seafood.

Ford urged Canadians to prioritize domestically built vehicles, calling on consumers to reject Chinese-made EVs. “Boycott the Chinese EV vehicles. Support companies that are building vehicles here,” he said.

Describing the issue as a national effort, Ford said protecting Canada’s auto industry requires unity. “This is a Team Canada approach. We gotta stick together,” he said.

Auto sector leaders echoed Ford’s concerns. Unifor National President Lana Payne said auto workers are already “in the fight for their lives,” and warned the agreement further threatens jobs in the industry.

Ford said he plans to meet with Prime Minister Carney and Canada’s premiers next week to discuss the issue before deciding on next steps.
