Five charged in $2M Amazon theft and fraud investigation in Ajax

Five people ; three men and two women are facing criminal charges following a major theft and fraud investigation involving an Amazon fulfillment centre in Ajax, police say. 

Durham Regional Police’s Financial Crimes Unit (FCU) began investigating the case in November 2025 after Amazon Loss Prevention reported suspected internal theft at the Amazon Fulfillment Centre located at 789 Salem Rd. Investigators allege that two employees were involved in the theft of approximately $2 million worth of merchandise over a two-year period. 

Police say that on Monday, Dec. 15, 2025, officers took the two employees into custody and executed a search warrant at a residence in Scarborough as part of a joint operation with Amazon’s Loss Prevention team. During the search, three additional suspects were located and arrested. 

As a result of the investigation, officers seized more than $250,000 in high-end electronics along with $50,000 in Canadian currency, police said. 

Those charged include: 

Mehul Baldevbhai Patem, 36, of Newmarket, charged with fraud over $5,000 and theft over $5,000. 

Ashishkumar Savani, 31, of Scarborough, charged with fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000, trafficking in property obtained by crime under $5,000, and possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking over $5,000. 

Bansari Savani, 28, of Scarborough, charged with possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking over $5,000, and possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000. 

Yash Dhameliya, 29, of Scarborough, charged with possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking over $5,000. 

Janviben Dhameliya, 28, of Scarborough, charged with possession of property obtained by crime for the purpose of trafficking over $5,000. 

Police say all five accused were released on an undertaking.

Anonymous tips can be provided through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or online, with tipsters potentially eligible for a cash reward. 

Police note that the allegations have not been proven in court and all accused are presumed innocent.
